Here’s to turning the page on a prosperous new year!

As we approach the end of another productive year, we’d like to take a moment to wish you a peaceful and restful holiday season. May this time bring you the opportunity to pause, reflect, and recharge for the exciting year ahead.

2024 has been a vibrant year for AEUP. We were proud to contribute to the Diamond Open Access movement with a presentation at the OPERAS conference and a poster at the Munin conference, which is now available for you to use. We also hosted an open board meeting at the BiblioCon conference, emphasing our interconnection with reserach libraries. These activities are a testament to the collaborative spirit and dedication of our community.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce that the 4th AEUP Conference will take place on 22–23 May 2025 in Vienna, Austria. Under the theme “Sustaining the Flow: Keeping the Pages Turning in Scholarly Publishing,” the conference will focus on strategies for sustainability and resilience in our dynamic field.

Stay tuned for further details in the coming months, including program highlights and registration information. For now, we encourage you to save the date and start planning to join us for this important event.

Thank you for being a vital part of our community. We look forward to continuing to work together in the new year.

Scaling up by joining forces: The AEUP and its community at BiblioCon

On 6 June, the Association of European University Presses (AEUP) hosted an open board meeting at BiblioCon 2024, the largest library trade fair in Hamburg, Germany. The event was organised for university presses and library-run publishing services from the D-A-CH region and aimed to identify strategies for gaining momentum through greater institutional embeddedness in research libraries.

Margo Bargheer, Chair of the AEUP Executive Board, opened the session by explaining why the meeting was held at BiblioCon. AEUP’s presence at this important conference underlines its commitment to fostering stronger relationships between university presses, promoting cooperation and sharing knowledge to achieve common goals in a dynamic publishing landscape.

We then discussed how AEUP connects and networks, AEUP’s involvement in international projects such as DIAMAS, CRAFT-OA and PALOMERA, contributing to the global discourse on scholarly publishing and fostering international collaboration.

In addition to its contribution to these projects, AEUP organises ad-hoc webinars and a biennial conference. The next one will take place in May 2025. In the run-up to the 2025 International Conference, AEUP is seeking input from participants on key issues such as sustainability in the context of business models. This collaborative approach ensures that the conference addresses the most pressing issues facing university presses today.

The final part of the meeting was dedicated to networking and getting to know each other. This fostered a sense of community and cooperation among university presses and library-run publishing services. One goal of the meeting was to explore how university presses and library publishing services can leverage existing library network organisational structures to improve operations. Libraries are well versed in building consortia to acquire content, a practice that has proven beneficial in securing better terms and enabling smaller players to access resources they otherwise couldn’t. By applying this concept to publishing services, libraries can use their consortia memberships and networks to create shared services and leverage specific expertise.

The AEUP invites all BiblioCon delegates, especially those responsible for or planning to offer publishing services within their libraries, as well as smaller scholarly presses, to join its efforts to shape scholarly communication in Europe.

Getting to know each other: Radboud University Press

The AEUP would mean nothing without you, our members. Since the beginning in 2010, new members have been joining each year, and this year marks a significant milestone as we welcome our 50th member. Yay! With this occasion, we are launching a new blog series titled “Getting to Know Each Other,” because that is precisely why AEUP exists: For university presses across Europe, our mission is to foster connections and cooperation. And what better way to achieve this than by sharing stories, experiences, and insights from our members?

With “Getting to Know Each Other,” we invite you to join us on a journey of discovery as we spotlight the individual presses that comprise our community. Through a couple of questions and a glimpse at their book covers that reflect the essence of each member, we aim to celebrate the unique contributions and perspectives that collectively form our association.

So, let’s kick off this exciting series by getting acquainted with our newest member, Radboud University Press. Our questions were answered by Elisabeth Elbers, Managing Editor. Thank you and welcome aboard!

Can you present your press, its history and mission?

Radboud University Press was founded in 2021 at Radboud University, one of the leading universities worldwide. We are a Diamond Open Access publisher of high-quality academic peer-reviewed books, textbooks, series, and journals across a wide range of disciplines. Meeting the highest academic standards is our primary goal. Our mission is to make scientific knowledge more freely accessible worldwide by making high-quality publications affordable for writers and their audiences.

Additionally PhD candidates pursuing their doctorates at Radboud University can publish their dissertations with Radboud University Press as part of the Radboud Dissertation Series. Please see www.radbouduniversitypress.nl for more information.

What are your expectations from AEUP and how do you wish to contribute to the future of institutional publishing in Europe?

We were interested in joining AEUP because we feel that we can learn a great deal from our colleagues across Europe. We share many similar struggles and challenges that we can overcome and solve together. Happy to contribute our experience as well. And looking forward to meeting our international colleagues at the annual conference! Thanks for welcoming us as the 50th member.

If you were to choose only three of all you published titles as representatives of your press, what titles would you choose?

Journal Ecclesial Futures
Water. A Dutch Cultural History by Lotte Jensen
Foundations of General Relativity. From Einstein to Black Holes by Klaas Landsman

Ready for 2024 in academic publishing?

With the New Year just over a month away, you may be starting to think about which professional events and conferences you will be attending this year. To help you keep track and make your decisions easier, we do our best to keep you up to date on Conferences & other events of interest page.
Of the upcoming events we recommend you to visit a workshop “The road towards Diamond Open Access” taking place on 12th of April at the Swansea University, United Kingdom. The workshop will address institutional leaders interested in learning approaches and strategies for supporting non-commercial, scholar-led publishing initiatives in their institutions. Elements for future recommendations and guidelines on Diamond Open Access for institutional leaders will also be used as a basis to steer discussions. The outcomes of the workshop will help the DIAMAS project partners to further develop policy advocacy and capacity building activities and will support EUA in implementing its Open Science Agenda 2025.
Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to meet AEUP representatives who will present the AEUP perspective on the transition to Open Access at the Operas Conference in Zadar, Croatia. The conference will take place from 24 to 26 April and we are looking forward to see you there!

(If you know about a conference or event that is not listed and should be, please let us know at secretary@aeup.eu. Thank you!)

Season’s Greetings
